Understanding how recapture works is important, as it can significantly affect the tax outcome when a vehicle is disposed of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-5d88d0bfa6bc59ea78f0786865cfc31a\"><strong>1. What is Depreciation Recapture?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-3e5eee9060498960a7ed9dd329b5c263\">When a vehicle used in a trade or business is sold or otherwise disposed of, the IRS requires taxpayers to &#8220;recapture&#8221; depreciation previously claimed (or allowable). Sale<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-5e453c3acbed5e4cc1d743e61dea09df\">You sell the machine for $20,000<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-6e4ae93a2a94db34f20eb99ccbb867dc\">Gain Calculation: Sales Price ($20,000) &#8211; Adjusted Basis ($15,000) = $5,000 Total Gain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-42ab260d4ecab67a1bcf2a43c458bd25\">    <strong>C. Depreciation Recapture: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-f038050aafb9e3f4dc749e268df93869\">Depreciation recapture is limited to the lesser of the total depreciation taken or the actual gain on sale.
